Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)

An RDA is an advanced dental assistant with further training and certifications than a DA. An RDA may be able to complete lots of important dental procedures, such as using a digital scanner, preparing teeth for bonding by dentist, placing a temporary crown, and many more. Most definitely, the RDA skill set is more valuable to the practice.

WHAT IS AN RDA?
In California, an RDA is a dental assistant who has completed a board-approved RDA program, has at least 15 months of work experience, and completed certifications in radiation safety and coronal polishing. In addition, you need to complete Dental Practice Act and Infection Control courses, carry a Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate, and pass an RDA ethics written exam.

WHAT IS RDA-Extended Function (RDA-EF)?
RDA-EF is an RDA who has successfully completed an RDA-EF program, passed the Board written and clinical exams. They are allowed to do more important dental procedures, such as pack retraction cords, apply fit and fissure sealants, and remove excess cement subgingivally.
